NU Korean Studies Seminar Series

9 қыркүйек 2024, дүйсенбі Public Talks

Dear NU Community,

The NU Korean Studies Centre invites you to the Korean Studies Seminar Series. For the second session of the series, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Jin Yu from the Korea Institute of Criminology and Justice, who will speak on "Policies on Gender-Based Violence and the Evolution of the Women's Movement in South Korea." As domestic violence has been a hotly debated topic in Kazakhstan recently, we hope that South Korea's experience with women's movements and gender violence policies will contribute to a more constructive discussion. This lecture is part of the Korea Foundation's 2024 Overseas Policy Research Support Program and will be in English. The lecture is open to the general public.

·9 September 2024 (Mon) 17:00-18:00

· NU Library, Conference Hall (5E.228)

Abstract: This presentation explores the development of gender-based violence policy and women's movements in South Korea from the 1980s to the present. The 1980s marked the beginning of the women's movement, with organizations like Korea Women's Hotline addressing domestic violence, which had been considered a private issue. In the 1990s, the women’s movement grew significantly, focusing on advocating for laws against domestic violence, sexual violence, and sexual harassment. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the rise of anti-sexual violence movements within universities, driven by young feminist groups. These movements led to significant policy changes and increased public awareness of sexual violence. Since the mid-2010s, digital feminism has emerged to address new forms of gender-based violence, such as digital sexual violence. This presentation highlights the crucial role of women's movements in shaping gender-based violence policy in South Korea, showing how feminist activism and public advocacy have driven legal and societal changes toward greater gender equality and protection for victims.
