At NU, Professor Zhumabay Bakenov conducts research on improving the durability of lithium-ion batteries, advanced methods of processing raw materials for battery application, and efficient battery recycling technologies. One of the problems he faces in his work is the lack of access to raw nickel that is being extracted in Kazakhstan. According to him, all of the nickel in the country is being mined by a private company that does not share samples even for examination.
