NU hosted the Heritage Alliance of the New Silk Road Roundtable

NU SSH faculty members Paula Dupuy, Daniel Scarborough and Michael Bechtel, organized the Fifth HANSR Roundtable “Heritage: mobility and migration, past and present”, on November 4-6.

This was a hybrid event with in-person meetings hosted on the NU campus in Astana.

The 2022 session focused on the tensions that exist from a historical perspective between population movement and stasis for building and maintaining tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

The Fifth HANSR Roundtable's keynote speakers included: Mr. Orgil Luvantseren, former Ambassador of Mongolia to the Swiss Confederation and Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations Office in Geneva and World Trade Organisation on Divided World and History Revised; Professor Russell Zanca from Northeastern Illinois University on Pastoralism as Heritage and History/Ethnography and Pastoralism as Present and Future: Why Study Pastoralism Today?; Professor Mike Fischer from the University of Southern California on Interactive Video Gaming and Heritage. 

Other speakers at the conference came from Kazakhstan, India, UK, Iraq, Syria, Germany, Poland, and Lebanon.

HANSR is the Heritage Alliance of the New Silk Road, designed to investigate the creative potential for social, historical, archaeological, and economic research opportunities in preserving cultural heritage. It also explores sustainable and ethical economic research opportunities through Roundtables, conferences, publications, scholarly debates, and discussions. All aspects of the tangible and intangible heritage of the new Silk Road are of interest to HANSR members.
