16 NU Researchers Won State Awards and Scientific Scholarships

The award ceremony was held in Turkestan on the 1st of March.

At the award ceremony, which took place at the International Kazakh-Turkish University in Turkestan with the participation of universities' representatives, scientists and teachers, educational leaders and students, Kazakh Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek awarded state scholarships and monetary prizes to 75 young scientists, five of whom are working at NU and National Laboratory Astana at NU on strategically important projects.

Young scientist Baktiyar Soltabayev heads the Laboratory of Advanced Sensors and is involved in a research project to develop gas sensors for monitoring air quality and its contents. NU SEDS Assistant Professor Zhanat Kappassov heads the Tactile Robotics Lab and works with students to build various sensors, including a reading mechanism for blind people and a tactile glove for breast cancer diagnosis. Assistant SEDS professor Galymzhan Nauryzbayev is researching wireless networks and 6G applications using artificial intelligence. Postdoctoral fellow and instructor in the NU SSH Biology Department Aigerim Soltabayeva is contributing to studying agricultural plant resistance to environmental changes. NLA Laboratory of Biosensors and Bioinstruments Senior Scientist Aliya Bekmurzayeva, under the guidance of Professor Daniele Tosi, is working with a team to develop fibre-optic network-based medical devices, including a biosensor for cancer biomarker detection.

Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek, in his welcoming speech, thanked teachers and scientists for their significant contribution to the development of education and science. He said that the support of scientists and teachers and the popularization of their projects and achievements will continue. According to him, a meeting of the National Council on Science and Technology under the President will be held in April this year, and there will be a significant exhibition of scientific works.

The winners of the "Best Scientific Worker" republican contest were announced at the end of 2023. According to results, 11 scientists - NU professors and researchers of the NU National Laboratory Astana were awarded state prizes in natural sciences, medicine and health care, engineering and technology. A total of 50 people across the country were named winners of the competition.

Thus, among the monetary prize receivers are  NU several SEDS Assistant Professors, including Almagul Mentbayeva, who conducts projects in the field of "green" energy and energy storage; Gulsim Kulsharova, whose interests relate to the field of microfluidics; Sultangali Arzykulov, based on analytical-theoretical approach conducts research in the field of telecommunications. Prizes were also awarded to NU SSH Assistant Professors -  Yerlan Amanbek, who uses mathematical modelling and calculations to predict the flow and transport of liquid and gas masses in the earth's strata; Askhat Jumabekov, whose scientific activity is devoted to research on the properties of organic solar cells; NUSOM Assistant Professor Gulzhanat Aimagambetova , who specializes in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Honours were also awarded to researchers of the NU National Laboratory Astana, including Arailym Nurpeissova, head of the Laboratory of Energy Storage Systems, Aliya Mukanova, lead researcher of the same laboratory, Samat Kozhakhmetov, lead researcher of the Laboratory of Microbiome, Sholpan Askarova, head of the Laboratory of Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine, and Fail Sultanov, lead researcher of NLA, who participated on behalf of the "Battery Institute" LLP, founded by NU Professor Zhumabay Bakenov.
