Nazarbayev University hosted the Secretary-General of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Mr. Sergio Mujica, who delivered a guest lecture on “The Role of International Standards in the Modern World and New Trends in Their Development.”

The event was organized in collaboration with the Kazakhstan Institute of Standardization and Metrology (KazStandard) and brought together representatives of higher education institutions, government agencies, and the academic community. The lecture provided a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and professionals to gain insights into the global system of standardization and its impact on technological progress and sustainable development.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Malik Saulebay, Director General of KazStandard, emphasized the importance of this visit as a reflection of Kazakhstan’s growing engagement in international standardization efforts:

“It is a great honor for us to welcome the Secretary-General of ISO to Kazakhstan for the first time. This visit demonstrates the international recognition of our national standardization system and highlights Kazakhstan’s active role in global initiatives in this field,” he stated.

During his presentation, Mr. Mujica discussed the evolution of ISO standards and their role in ensuring safety, innovation, and quality across industries worldwide. He also outlined new trends, including digital transformation, sustainability, and ethical governance in standardization.

The lecture was followed by a Q&A session, where students and researchers had the chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities of applying international standards in national contexts. The event concluded with short student presentations on ISO-related topics.

ISO is the world’s leading international organization for standardization, uniting 165 member countries. Mr. Sergio Mujica has served as Secretary-General of ISO since 2017, leading the organization’s efforts to foster global collaboration and innovation through common standards.

This visit marks a significant milestone in strengthening cooperation between Kazakhstan and ISO, as well as promoting the role of Nazarbayev University as a platform for dialogue on international best practices and innovation.
