School of Mining and Geosciences

NU SMG was established in 2016, and currently runs programs in mining engineering, petroleum engineering, and geoscience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The mission of the School is to educate tomorrow’s Earth Science leaders for Kazakhstan, the region, and the world. NU SMG aims at expanding and developing knowledge and technology through teaching and research with the vision to be recognized by our peers as a national and international leader in earth science education and research. We will apply knowledge and technology to benefit society domestically and internationally by extracting the earth's natural resources in a safe, economic, and environmentally responsible manner. The School partners with local and international universities and companies, including the Colorado School of Mines in the USA.

We currently offer three undergraduate degree programs for interested candidates:

Mining Engineering, Bachelor of Science

Mining Engineers work in mining and mineral extraction facilities. They are in charge of coordinating and supervising all the activities in the mine regarding digging, extracting, and transporting minerals out of the mine.

Mining Engineers specialize in designing, developing, and testing machines, techniques, and processes for harvesting geological material.

Geologists are versed in the makeup of the earth’s surface. They use this knowledge along with exploration technologies to locate potential deposits of natural resources.

Other responsibilities include the sustainable exploitation of groundwater, and assessing mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

Master of Science in Mining Engineering is a two-year full-time MSc degree program that is aimed at training engineers who can design, conduct and manage mining operations as well as developing research skills and knowledge to support the mining industry in order to ensure safe, environmentally friendly, and economically viable mining.

Petroleum engineering is the field of engineering that deals with the exploration, extraction, and production of oil and natural gas. Petroleum engineers are responsible for producing hydrocarbon resources from oil and gas reservoirs.

A petroleum engineer chooses the best method for drilling and extracting oil and natural gas from a certain well. They keep an eye on drilling operations and fix any operational issues. They also decide how to stimulate an underperforming well and devise new strategies for recovering any leftover oil and gas from existing wells.

Geologists are scientists who study the earth processes, explore the earth for metals, oil, gas and water, and develop methods to extract earth’s resources.
